So with everything going on in the world I am going to hit the topic of shopping local/supporting small business!
Don't get me wrong I still run to Target and TJ Maxx. I appreciate and LOVE the deals I can find! But there is just so much more to supporting a small business. I truly hope that some of you are inspired and reach out to local store as everything begins to move into phase 2, Instead of some of the corporate purchases you have been making online during self isolation/shelter in place!
I started seeing the significance around 3-4 years ago! Now I understand that these stores are a little more spendy sometimes but this is why I think it doesn’t matter (if it’s something you can handle in your budget)
Here are my two main reasons behind supporting local business vs the franchises around town!
1) Community: This plays a huge part in your local economy and quite often community perks(such as little league and outreach programs). So often we hit up our local pizza shop or grocery stores to sponsor what dues and fees don’t cover! I know when I was younger we always hit up the local restaurants or feed store that we were frequently at to support fundraisers and sponsoring. These local businesses keep our communities going and always show support and town spirit when we need it why wouldn’t we do the same for them?! Also when we are in a crisis our local stores think of us and their employees more than most corporate businesses!
2) Family: When you buy from places like old navy and amazon your money is going into the pockets of corporation, "mom and pop" shops go into your local economy as well as families. Occasionally families you know personally, depending on the size of your hometown. It honestly wasn't until I was 19 and my best friend owned a local gym that I really began to notice this. Watching that take care of their family and knowing that if they had a slow year it could turn into an issue. Yes it was more than planet fitness but I also got a little extra, someone who cared that I was there and I was paying for a family I knew to live their life and have their dream come true. I know they took more pride in their gym than any planet fitness or 24hr fitness ever did. {I mean seriously a friend of mine got a staph infection from a corporate 24hr gym!!}
They just take such good care of their business because it's essentially one of their babies! They love their baby and only want the best for them. It just feels like they are always better! So for me its worth the little extra cash to support small businesses!
PSA: local coffee shops almost always taste better than Starbucks and is much cheaper!
